Irvine Car Accident Injures Two

Two people were injured in an Irvine car accident after their respective vehicles collided at a local street intersection. The Orange County Register reports that the injury collision happened at the intersection of Paseo Westpark and Barranca Parkway the morning of June 15, 2010. Orange County Fire Authority officials say the accident occurred when a Ford SUV and a Honda sedan struck each other. Firefighters had to use the Jaws of Life to extricate the female driver of the Ford SUV. Both injured victims were transported to a local hospital for treatment of their injuries. An investigation is ongoing.

Car Accident Statistics

According to California Highway Patrol’s 2008 Statewide Integrated Traffic Records System (SWITRS), there were five deaths and 840 injuries involving car accidents in Irvine. In Orange County as a whole, 152 people died and 13,414 were injured as a result of car accidents during the same year.

Right-of-Way Issues

Based on this news report, it is not quite clear who or what caused the collision. However, we do know that this car accident occurred at a street intersection. It is probable that one of the drivers ran a red light or failed to yield right-of-way to the other vehicle.

California law requires motorists to yield right-of-way to oncoming vehicles. According to California Vehicle Code section 21800 (a): “The driver of a vehicle approaching an intersection shall yield the right-of-way to any vehicle which has entered the intersection from a different highway.”

Fault and Liability

If the driver of the Ford SUV failed to yield right-of-way, then she could be held liable for the accident and injuries. The same holds true for the other driver as well. In such cases, injured victims can seek compensation to cover medical expenses, loss of wages, cost of hospitalization, rehabilitation, physical therapy and other related damages.
