Fatal Car Accident in Northridge

A woman was killed in a fiery Los Angeles car accident after her SUV was rear-ended by another vehicle at a traffic light. According to a news report in the Los Angeles Daily News, the victim was in her Infiniti SUV stopped in a turn lane at the intersection of Reseda Boulevard and Devonshire Street the morning of June 21, 2010. Officials say she was waiting for a green light when her SUV was rear-ended by a Mercedes sedan going east on Devonshire at a high rate of speed.

The impact of the collision pushed the SUV into the intersection and the SUV caught fire. The sole occupant of the SUV was pronounced dead at the scene. The Mercedes also swiped another vehicle and rolled over. The driver of the Mercedes was transported to an area hospital with critical injuries. The occupants of the other car were uninjured.

I offer my deepest condolences to the family and friends of this deceased woman for their devastating loss. Please keep them in your thoughts and prayers. It is indeed fortunate that no one in the third car sustained any injuries.

Los Angeles Car Accidents

According to California Highway Patrol’s 2008 Statewide Integrated Traffic Records System (SWITRS), there were 268 deaths and 25,588 injuries involving car accidents in Los Angeles. Countywide, 667 people died and 52,228 were injured as a result of car accidents during the same year.

Causes and Liability Issues

It is not clear what caused the Mercedes to rear-end the Infiniti, which was stopped for a light. If the details of this news report are accurate, speed was a factor. But, was the driver of the Mercedes impaired? Was he or she distracted or driving recklessly? Did the driver suffer a medical condition? I trust officials are examining these as well as other issues in order to determine exactly why the driver of the Mercedes plowed into the Infiniti.

In such cases, it would be in the best interests of the deceased victim’s family to contact an experienced Los Angeles personal injury lawyer, who will stay on top of the official investigation and make sure that their legal rights are protected. If the driver of the Mercedes is determined to have been at fault, he or she could be held liable for the victim’s wrongful death.
