Los Angeles Car Accident Critically Injures Pedestrian

A man was critically injured in a September 9, 2009 Los Angeles car accident when he was struck by a car while walking on a Long Beach street. According to a news report in The Press Telegram, the victim, believed to be about 20 years old, was walking north on Clark Avenue near Garford Street when a minivan hit him. Long Beach police said the driver of the minivan remained at the scene of the accident and called for help. Police also say the motorist was not under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs. The victim was transported to an area hospital in critical condition.

My heart goes out to this seriously injured car accident victim who is apparently fighting for his life. I hope and pray that he has a speedy and complete recovery. Please keep this young man in your prayers.

Los Angeles Pedestrian Accident Statistics

According to California Highway Patrol’s 2007 Statewide Integrated Traffic Records System (SWITRS), 15 deaths and 274 injuries were reported as a result of pedestrian accidents in Long Beach, California. In Los Angeles County as a whole, 210 deaths and 5,095 injuries occurred in 2007 involving pedestrian accidents.

The news report does not provide many important details about this car accident. It is not clear how or why the driver of the minivan collided with the pedestrian. It’s also not clear exactly where the pedestrian was walking at the time of the crash. However, in such cases, it is important to look into all the factors that may have led to this collision. If I were a member of this young victim’s family, I’d want to know whether there was any negligence on the part of the driver. Was he or she impaired, distracted or otherwise reckless at the time of the accident? Was there a dangerous condition on the roadway that might have caused or contributed to this car accident?

Los Angeles Personal Injury Lawyer

It would be in the best interest of the victim’s family to consult with an experienced Los Angeles personal injury lawyer who will sift through all aspects of this case and make sure that the negligent parties are held accountable. In such car accident cases where negligence or wrongdoing is involved, injured victims may seek compensation for medical expenses, cost of hospitalization, medications, physical therapy, loss of wages and even long-term care.

A skilled Los Angeles personal injury lawyer should also look into whether there was a dangerous condition on the roadway that may have caused this accident. If that was the case, the city of Long Beach or the governmental entity responsible for maintaining that roadway could be held liable. Any such claim against a governmental agency in California must be properly filed within six months of the accident or injury.
