DUI Collision in Riverside County Causes Serious Injuries

By

A female passenger suffered major injuries in a Riverside car accident, which police report, involved a drunk driver. According to a KPSP news report, the DUI collision occurred at the intersection of Bellflower and Brookside avenues in Beaumont the night of May 9, 2011. Police say that the driver of a Toyota Tacoma pickup truck, Darrin Hammer, ran a stop sign and turned left directly in front of a Dodge pickup truck. The Dodge pickup veered off the road and went into a concrete guardrail before overturning. A female passenger in the Dodge sustained major head, chest and abdominal injuries. Both drivers sustained minor injuries. Hammer was arrested on suspicion of felony driving under the influence.

My thoughts and prayers are with the woman who sustained severe injuries following this DUI collision. I wish her the very best for a complete and speedy recovery from her injuries.

DUI Statistics

According to California Highway Patrol’s 2008 Statewide Integrated Traffic Records System (SWITRS), one person was killed and nine were injured in Beaumont DUI collisions. During that same year, 101 fatalities and 1,090 injuries occurred due to alcohol-related accidents in Riverside County.

Violation of Laws

If the details of this news report are accurate, the driver of the Toyota pickup, Hammer, was driving under the influence, ran a stop sign and made an unsafe left turn. According to California Vehicle Code Section 23152 (a): “It is unlawful for any person who is under the influence of any alcoholic beverage or drug, or under the combined influence of any alcoholic beverage and drug, to drive a vehicle.” Running a stop sign is a violation of California Vehicle Code Section 21802.

Liability Issues

In such cases where negligence or wrongdoing is involved, injured victims can seek compensation from the at-fault driver for medical expenses, loss of wages, cost of hospitalization, rehabilitation and other related damages. Car accident victims would be well-advised to contact a reputed Riverside personal injury lawyer, who has the experience and a successful track record holding drunk drivers financially responsible for their actions.
