Woman Killed in San Diego Car Accident

By

Aurora Contreras, 50, was killed in a San Diego car accident when a Dodge Intrepid struck her disabled compact car. According to a news report in The San Diego Union-Tribune, the fatal car accident occurred on Interstate 805 near State Route 94 in the Mount Hope neighborhood of San Diego the morning of April 13, 2011.

Contreras was the driver of the stalled compact car, which was hit by the Dodge. She was partially ejected from her vehicle on impact and died at the scene. The driver of the Dodge and two children who were passengers in that vehicle were transported to a local hospital with unknown injuries. An investigation is ongoing.

My heartfelt condolences go out to the family and friends of Aurora Contreras following this injury car accident. Apparently, Contreras who lived with her son, was on her way to work at the time. Tragic! My thoughts and prayers are also with the injured victims of this terrible accident.

San Diego Car Accident Statistics

According to California Highway Patrol’s 2008 Statewide Integrated Traffic Records System (SWITRS), 81 people were killed and 6,123 were injured in San Diego car accidents. During that same year, there were 246 fatalities and 13,527 injuries reported as a result of San Diego County car accidents.

What Caused This Fatal Car Accident?

Based on this news report, it is unclear what caused the compact car to become disabled or why the driver of the Dodge was unable to avoid the collision. There are several unanswered questions here. What caused the compact car to become disabled? Did the driver of the disabled car have hazard lights on? Was the driver of the Dodge traveling at a high rate of speed, which prevented that person from stopping in time to avoid the fatal accident? Was Contreras partially ejected due to a defective seatbelt? I trust officials are looking into these and other issues in order to determine what occurred here and why.

Liability Issues

If the driver of the Dodge is determined to have been at fault here, then he or she could be held liable for Contreras’ wrongful death. If a defective seatbelt caused Contreras’ fatal injuries, then the auto maker can also be held liable for her wrongful death. In such cases, the family of the deceased victim would be well-advised to contact an experienced San Diego personal injury lawyer, who will analyze all facets of the incident and ensure that all the negligent parties are held accountable. It would be a good idea to preserve the vehicle in its current crashed condition, unaltered, so it can be carefully examined by an expert for evidence of product defects and malfunctions.
