17-year-old Bicyclist Killed in Canoga Park Hit-and-Run Car Accident

By

Alex Romero, a 17-year-old from Reseda, has been fatally injured in a Los Angeles car accident, which officials say, involved a hit-and-run driver. According to an ABC news report, the fatal bicycle accident occurred the night of April 20, 2011 near the intersection of De Soto Avenue and Valerio Street.

Officials say Alex Romero and another teen were riding their bikes side by side when a gray Toyota Corolla hatchback traveling north on De Soto Avenue rear-ended Alex’s bicycle, killing him. The driver fled the scene of the fatal crash. The other bicyclist was uninjured. Anyone with information about the hit-and-run driver is asked to contact LAPD at 1-877-LAPD-24-7.

I offer my deepest condolences to the family members and friends of young Alex Romero for their heartbreaking loss. Apparently, Alex was a senior at Chatsworth High School. Tragic! Alex Romero’s grieving family will be in my thoughts and prayers.

Los Angeles Bicycle Accident Statistics

According to California Highway Patrol’s 2008 Statewide Integrated Traffic Records System (SWITRS), there were 10 deaths and 1,518 injuries involving bicycle accidents in the city of Los Angeles. Countywide, bicycle accidents claimed 33 lives and injured 3,315 people during the same year.

Leaving the Scene of a Fatal Accident

Based on this news report, it appears that the driver of the Toyota not only struck and killed a teen, but also left him lying on the roadway without care or medical attention. Motorists are required by the law to stop, remain at the scene of the accident and render assistance to the injured victims. In this case, the motorist did none of the above, but chose to speed away from the scene in a despicable act, leaving a critically injured victim on the street. Appalling!

California Vehicle Code Section 20001 (a) states: “The driver of a vehicle involved in an accident resulting in injury to a person, other than himself or herself, or in the death of a person shall immediately stop the vehicle at the scene of the accident.”

I certainly hope officials apprehend this dangerous driver and bring him or her to justice.
