Police Officer Injured in Fresno Car Accident

By

A female police officer was injured in a Fresno car accident, which officials say, may have involved a motorist running a red light. According to a KFSN news report, the injury car accident occurred at the intersection of Belmont and Fulton in Central Fresno the night of March 8, 2011. The police squad car and another vehicle collided and the officer inside was pinned in her vehicle. The injured officer complained of back pain and was hospitalized with unknown injuries. Investigators are trying to determine if one of the vehicles ran a red light at the intersection.

My thoughts and prayers are with the injured police officer following this Fresno car accident. I wish her a complete and speedy recovery.

Fresno Car Accident Statistics

According to California Highway Patrol’s 2008 Statewide Integrated Traffic Records System (SWITRS), 33 people were killed and 1,485 were injured in Fresno car accidents. During that same year, there were 127 fatalities and 3,323 injuries reported as a result of Fresno County car accidents.

Possible Red Light Violation

If the details of this news report are accurate, police are trying to determine if one of the two motorists failed to obey a traffic signal. California Vehicle Code Section 21453 (a) states: “A driver facing a circular red signal shall stop at the limit line before entering the crosswalk on the near side of the intersection or, if none, then before entering the intersection, and shall remain stopped until an indication to proceed is shown.”

Liability Issues

In such cases, the at-fault party can be held liable for the injuries, damages and losses caused. If the driver of the other car ran the red light and caused the crash, the police officer can claim compensation from that driver or his or her insurance company for medical expenses, loss of earnings and other related damages. In addition, she could also claim workers compensation benefits from her employer since she was on the job at the time of the car accident.
