Fatal Hit-and-Run Car Accident in Los Angeles

By

Gae Sum Park, 81, was killed in a Los Angeles car accident, which involved a hit-and-run driver. According to a CBS News report, the fatal pedestrian accident occurred the early morning of November 20, 2010 at Olympic and Harvard boulevards in Los Angeles’ Koreatown. Officials say Park was walking outside of the marked crosswalk at the time of the fatal car accident. She sustained major body and head trauma and died at the scene of the accident. Police have described the hit-and-run vehicle as a light-colored vehicle, possibly a Toyota 4Runner.

My deepest condolences go out to the family and friends of Gae Sum Park. My thoughts and prayers are with them following this tragic pedestrian accident.

Los Angeles Pedestrian Accidents

According to California Highway Patrol’s 2008 Statewide Integrated Traffic Records System (SWITRS), 104 people were killed and 2,716 were injured in Los Angeles pedestrian accidents. During that same year, there were 214 fatalities and 4,985 injuries reported as a result of pedestrian accidents in Los Angeles County.

Hit-And-Run Accidents

Under California law, drivers involved in injury accidents must stop immediately at the scene of the car accident. California Vehicle Code Section 20001 (a) states: “The driver of a vehicle involved in an accident resulting in injury to a person, other than himself or herself, or in the death of a person shall immediately stop the vehicle at the scene of the accident.”

Based on this news report, the driver of the suspect vehicle hit the elderly woman and left her lying on the roadway. Despicable! Not only is hit-and-run illegal, but it is also inhumane, irresponsible and heartless. Regardless of whose fault the car accident was, it is the duty and responsibility of a motorist to stop and remain at the scene of a car accident he or she is involved in. Very sad that people would leave the scene. Hopefully the person at fault will be found.

Despicable is right! How can a human being hit an old woman – or anyone – and then run and not offer some assistance?
