Two Seriously Injured in San Diego Car Accident

By

A 46-year-old woman and her 9-year-old daughter sustained serious injuries in a San Diego car accident the morning of December 31, 2009, after the vehicle they were in was rear-ended by a driver who officials say may have been under the influence of prescription drugs. According to a news report in the San Diego Union-Tribune, the major injury crash occurred on Sports Arena Boulevard near West Point Loma Boulevard, when the driver of a Toyota 4Runner failed to stop and rear-ended a Toyota Camry and at least three other vehicles stopped at a red light. The woman and her daughter were in the Toyota Camry. The girl sustained severe head injuries. The driver of the 4Runner is suspected of being under the influence of prescription drugs.

My heart goes out to the woman and her young daughter who were the most seriously injured victims of this car accident. I hope and pray they both have a quick and complete recovery. They will certainly be in my prayers.

Car Accident Statistics

According to California Highway Patrol’s 2007 Statewide Integrated Traffic Records System (SWITRS), there were 84 fatalities and 6,516 injuries involving car accidents in San Diego. Countywide, car accidents claimed 268 lives and injured 14,641 people in 2007. Also, in San Diego County, 116 people died and 2,068 were injured as a result of DUI car accidents during the same year.

California DUI Law

Based on this news report, it seems to me that the driver of the SUV was responsible for the accident and resulting serious injuries. This driver failed to stop at a red light and rammed into the other vehicles at the intersection. Driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs (recreational or prescription) is against California law. According to California Vehicle Code Section 23152 (a): “It is unlawful for any person who is under the influence of any alcoholic beverage or drug, or under the combined influence of any alcoholic beverage and drug, to drive a vehicle.”
