Orange County Man Killed in Car Accident

By

A Newport Beach motorcyclist who was fatally injured in a Riverside car accident has been identified by authorities as 50-year-old Robert Grice, Jr. The fatal motorcycle crash occurred on the Ortega Highway the morning of December 6, 2009 when Grice was riding his 2008 Ducati motorcycle. At the time, a Toyota Corolla crossed the center line and slammed head-on into the motorcycle. Grice was thrown of his motorcycle and died at the scene. According to California Highway Patrol officials, the Corolla was going at 45 mph, but crossed over the center divide into opposing lanes in order to avoid a slowing vehicle.

This is indeed a devastating loss for everyone who knew and loved Robert Grice Jr. I offer my deepest condolences to his family and friends. Please keep them in your prayers.

Motorcycle Accidents in Riverside

According to CHP’s 2007 Statewide Integrated Traffic Records System (SWITRS), there was one death and 11 injuries in Lake Elsinore as a result of motorcycle accidents. Countywide 41 people died and 562 were injured in motorcycle accidents in 2007. Also, in Riverside County, car accidents caused 279 fatalities and 9,925 injuries during the same year.

If this news report is accurate, it seems to me that the driver of the Corolla could be at fault for going off his assigned traffic lane and causing this fatal head-on collision. There are still many questions here? What was the speed limit on that section of the highway? Was the driver of the Corolla speeding? Was the driver under the influence, distracted or otherwise negligent? Given the fact that Ortega Highway has its inherent dangers with its winding roadways, there is no question that this driver should have been more careful and more conscious of his surroundings and traffic.
