Los Angeles Car Accident Leaves Four Dead

By

Four young people — 18-year-old Rylan Jernigan, 19-year-old Araceli Alvarez, 22-year-old Stephen Nubani and 22-year-old Cesar Chunga — the occupants of an Audi A4 convertible were killed in a Los Angeles car accident after their car was broadsided by another vehicle. According to a KABC news report, the fatal car accident occurred the night of September 26, 2009 on a dark highway. The four victims were on their way to a party when 22-year-old Nubani, who was driving the Audi, reportedly drove right through a stop sign at 70th Street and Avenue N and crashed into a Cadillac. One victim in the Cadillac suffered major injuries and was taken to an area hospital. California Highway Patrol officials are saying it’s not clear why Nubani ran the stop sign.

My heart goes out to the families of all the young people who died in this tragic Palmdale car accident. I offer my deepest condolences to everyone who knew and loved these victims. I also wish the seriously injured victim the very best for a quick and complete recovery.

Los Angeles Car Accident Statistics

According to California Highway Patrol’s 2007 Statewide Integrated Traffic Records System (SWITRS), 10 fatalities and 756 injuries were reported as a result of car accidents in Palmdale, California. In Los Angeles County as a whole, there were 712 fatalities and 56,475 injuries in 2007 involving car accidents.

In this particular case, it’s not clear how or why Stephen Nubani ran the stop sign. The news report states the highway was “blackened” or extremely dark that night. Did Nubani miss the stop sign because he couldn’t see it? Was there a blinking light at the stop sign to indicate the presence of a stop sign at that intersection? If I were a family member of the deceased victims, I’d certainly want to know how dangerous this intersection is and if it had contributed to the fatal accident.
