The holidays seem to be a popular time for children to ride all-terrain vehicles. Unfortunately, this is also that time of the year when the number of deaths and injuries as a result of ATV crashes is at its highest. A majority of the crashes involve younger children or teenagers who crash their vehicles because they lose control of them. Safety experts urge parents to supervise their children, make sure they are buckled up and are wearing the necessary safety gear before they get on one of these vehicles.
Here is a round-up of recent ATV crashes from all parts of the country:
Girl injured: A 9-year-old girl suffered serious head injuries and a broken collar bone in Thibodaux, La. as she and her father rode the four-wheelers through a private cane field. The girl lost control of her vehicle when her accelerator became stuck, officials said. The girl was reportedly riding a child-size ATV.
Hunter dead: A hunter was found dead in Tunica, Miss. after he lost control of his four-wheel all-terrain vehicle on a rural road. The man was identified as 42-year-old Wayne Comardella. The ATV reportedly hit an embankment and flipped over. Comardella suffered fatal head and chest injuries, the article said.
1 dead, 1 injured: This crash happened in Fort Myers, Fla. at night time when the driver of the ATV lost control and the vehicle flipped. A man identified as 30-year-old Thomas James McDade was killed and 21-year-old Sarah Francis, who drove the vehicle, was seriously injured in the crash.
Woman dead: A 27-year-old Falls Church, Va. woman died after she lost control of her ATV, went down a hill and crashed into a creek bed. Tatiana Gomez was pronounced dead on the scene. She was reportedly wearing a helmet.
Two injured: Two 22-year-old riders on an ATV were severely injured after their ATV crashed into a chain link fence near St. Francis University in Loretto, PA. Pennsylvania ranks first in the country for the number of ATV crashes. Alcohol was reportedly a factor in this particular crash. Both crash victims were charged with drunk driving.
High school student dead: A Texas teen died after her ATV rolled over a country road. Christy Chauntel Nerren, 16, died in the hospital while her passenger Mary Lou Yanez, also 16, escaped with minor injuries. The girls were reportedly riding an Arctic Cat four-wheeler, which officials said, swerved to the right before rolling over on its left side. Yanez was thrown out of the vehicle and landed in a ditch while Nerren was pinned under the ATV.
