17 Workers Injured, 11 Still Missing after Major Oil Rig Explosion
The U.S. Coast Guard has called off its search for 11 workers who have been missing since an explosion on an oil rig off the Louisiana coast on April 20, 2010, according to an Associated Press news report. The blast rocked the Deepwater Horizon rig leaving 17 injured and 11 still missing. More than 100 survivors made it ashore on a life boat two days after the blast. The oil rig was owned by Transocean Ltd. and was under contract to oil giant BP for exploratory drilling. Officials are still looking into what caused this horrific blast.
My heart goes out to the families of the missing workers and those who suffered serious personal injuries in this oil rig explosion. I sincerely hope and pray that those workers are safe and will return to shore soon. I also sympathize with the families of the more than 100 workers who must have been through a nightmare for the two days after the blast, until their safe return. I wish the injured workers the very best for a speedy and complete recovery. Please keep all these workers and their families in your thoughts and prayers.
Off-Shore Drilling Accidents
According to the U.S. Minerals and Management Service, human error was a factor in many of the more than 1,400 off-shore drilling accidents in the United States between 2001 and 2007. The Deepwater Horizon itself was the site of a 2005 fire that was determined to have been caused by human error. A federal investigation at the time determined that a crane operator on the rig had become distracted while refueling the crane causing the diesel to overflow. No one was injured in that fire.
