A 31-year-old Berkley man died after being hit by an Amtrak train while taking a shortcut across two tracks and talking on his cell phone at the same time, according to an Associated Press news report. According to witnesses, the train accident occurred when Scott Slaughter waited for one train to pass by on the first set of tracks and then crossed on to the second set of tracks where he was hit by a train. What’s worse, officials say Slaughter did not hear the second train – the one that hit him – because he was talking on his cell phone.
